“Adventure is out there”, a quote made famous by Disney’s Up back in 2009 when I first started university, has stuck with me throughout my journey in Australia. I like many of you, made the trip to pack up everything in search of something new and exciting. I had never been to Australia before, yet there I was in January of 2014 packing my bags for an adventure. I knew that medical school in Australia was going to be a change of pace from the life I had made for myself back in Detroit, yet I was completely naïve of all the doors that were about to open for me.
Since my arrival in 2014, I have fallen head over heels in love for this wonderful country. I have been fortunate enough to undertake placement opportunities in rural places like Boulia, with a population of 300 people. I’ve driven through the red dirt of Alice Springs up to Tennant Creek, hitched a ride on a yacht around the Whitsundays, and conquered the summer snows on the Overland Track in Tasmania.
Before any of this could happen, I had to take my first new steps around the James Cook University campus. It is because of JCU that I have had all of these opportunities. I started clubs, joined clubs, went to guest speaker nights, met new friends from Australia and from overseas. At O-Week I was overwhelmed by everything that was going on, but I took a chance, put my name down for different things. Here I am 5 years later, with stories that will last me a lifetime.
To all the international students just arriving in Australia. If I had to let you know anything it is this: Adventure is out there, you just need to take that first step.
