Julia: The Great Barrier Reef Experience

Hi and welcome to my blog. My name is Julia and I am from Germany. I am studying at JCU’s Cairns campus as part of the Study Abroad program. I am studying subjects related to my Ecology degree. Over the semester I will be writing about my experiences as an international student studying at JCU and sharing advice to future students to make the most of their time in North Queensland, Australia!

One thing everyone who finds themselves in North Queensland should do, is visit the Great Barrier Reef!

I have never been diving or snorkeling before. It was an unforgettable experience. Australia is famous for its iconic natural landmarks and now I understand why. While I was swimming through corals, I was surrounded by beautiful sea creatures!  I have to admit, that I was not so talented in the snorkeling techniques at first, but after only a few strokes I figured it out and swam like one of the fishes with my flippers through the shallow coastal sea. I even managed to accompany three sea turtles on their journey across the water for a few minutes.

We used an underwater camera to save these incredible moments as digital memories. I would highly recommend that everyone visits the Great Barrier Reef. This is one the best things about living in North Queensland.

I hope you’ve enjoyed my first blog and I hope new, current and future students will have the chance to visit the Great Barrier Reef. Something you can only do when in North Queensland.
