This week, we went to beautiful Cairns.
We rented a car online at www.vroomvroomvroom.com.au, which compares car rentals.
We got a Nissan Pulsar for 245 AUD for 4 days, including an excess reduction for accidents ($3000 down to $400). Since our driver was over 25, we did not have to pay the extra 27 AUD /day surcharge for drivers under 25. In Townsville, however, there are only big car rental agencies such as Hertz, Europcar or Avis. So if you should consider renting a car with the backpacker car rentals in bigger cities/ tourist cities such as Cairns, etc. (e.g. http://www.travellers-autobarn.com.au/?gclid=CIra-vK4rrkCFQxIpgod13YAoA), they are much cheaper, especially for people under 25.
Another travel possibility for going to Cairns is to take the Greyhound bus, which is about 50 AUD one way for a student.
Once we arrived in Cairns, we had trouble with our booking for the hostel. We booked the Koala Beach Resort online through www.Hostelbookers.com.au. However, the hostel made a double booking for our private 5-bed dorm and put us in an 8-bed dorm without telling us. Since we arrived after the reception hours and our keys for the room did not fit, we had to call the ‘late check-in number’. After several tries, a very ‘friendly’ person, who was apparently in the middle of partying, called us back. After a while, she finally came back to the hostel to give us the keys for a free apartment (for the same price!). I never met such an unfriendly person before. But luckily, everything worked out in the end. We had our room plus correct keys and she could go back to her party 😉
Apart from the very first night, it was an amazing weekend!
Even though we had to skip our snorkel day trip because of the high waves, we went to see a lot of other amazing things…
…Cape Tribulation. This is a 2.5 hour drive north of Cairns. Make sure you have 23 AUD for the short ferry ride across the river.
…Kuranda. You can either go there by car or take the train for a scenic train ride through the rainforest.
…Milla Milla falls.
…and Mission Beach
It was a perfect weekend with amazing people.
See you guys next week 🙂
Back to studying now.
